Day & NiteOwl
The Day & NiteOwl Remote Plant Monitoring System
Featuring Expanded Liquid Asphalt Tank Farm Monitoring, Alerts, and Remote Status Checks
Monitor more of your tank farm, receive alerts wherever you are, and check critical plant conditions without making an unnecessary trip to the plant.
Always Know What Is Happening at Your Plant
The new Day & NiteOwl advances asphalt plant monitoring far beyond basic hot oil temperature alerts.
In addition to providing call-in status checks and automatic call-out alerts, the Day & NiteOwl gives plant personnel expanded visibility into liquid asphalt tanks, fuel tanks, hot oil heaters, pumps, burner circuits, and other critical equipment.
Plant personnel can receive updates through voice calls and text messages, check the status of connected devices at any time, and review tank levels and operating trends from one convenient touchscreen interface.
That means fewer unnecessary trips to the plant, better inventory planning, and faster awareness when conditions require attention.

- Greater Tank Farm Visibility
- Faster Alarm Awareness
- Better Material Ordering
- Fewer Unnecessary Plant Visits
- Flexible Monitoring and Control
- Continued Monitoring During an Outage

Benefits of the Day & NiteOwl
Greater Tank Farm Visibility
View liquid asphalt and fuel tank levels, temperatures, inventory information, and equipment status from one system.
Faster Alarm Awareness
Receive alerts through the control house speaker, automated calls, and text messages.
Better Material Ordering
Use accurate tank level information and historical usage charts to improve asphalt cement and fuel ordering.
Fewer Unnecessary Plant Visits
Call or text the system to check critical plant conditions without sending personnel to the plant.
Flexible Monitoring and Control
Use available analog inputs, digital inputs, and digital outputs to configure the system around your plant’s equipment.
Continued Monitoring During an Outage
The rechargeable battery backup can keep the system operating for up to six hours following a loss of power.
Check On Conditions Without Driving to the Plant
One of the most valuable features of the Day & NiteOwl is the ability to contact the system whenever you need an update.
Authorized recipients can call or text the Day & NiteOwl to receive the current status of connected devices. The system can report monitored conditions such as tank levels, temperatures, pump amperage, and equipment status.
Instead of sending someone to the plant on a Sunday afternoon to verify that the hot oil heater is operating before Monday morning production, personnel can check its status remotely.
This can save time, reduce unnecessary travel, and give your team greater confidence that critical equipment is ready for the next production day.

Get Critical Alerts Wherever You Are
When the Day & NiteOwl detects an alarm condition, it can notify designated personnel through several methods: an audio speaker in the control house, automated voice calls, outbound text messages.
Alarm thresholds can be defined by the user based on the operating requirements of each monitored device.
When a text-message recipient receives an alarm, that individual has five minutes to acknowledge it by replying to the message. If the alert is not acknowledged, the Day & NiteOwl proceeds to the next recipient on the notification list.
This structured notification process helps make sure an alarm does not go unnoticed simply because one person is unavailable.
Cellular Comms Without a Landline
The Day & NiteOwl uses cellular-based communications, eliminating the need to maintain an antiquated landline solely for plant monitoring.
Through cellular communication, the system can provide:
- Voice call alerts
- Text-message alerts
- Call-in status checks
- Text-in status checks
- Remote digital output commands
This gives plant personnel a more flexible and accessible way to stay informed about critical equipment and tank conditions.
Remote Equipment Control When Appropriate
The Day & NiteOwl includes two digital outputs that can be controlled locally or remotely by authorized users.
These outputs can be configured for appropriate plant functions, such as initiating a passive hot oil heater reset following a low-temperature alert when plant conditions and established safety procedures allow it.
Remote activation should only be used for approved applications and in accordance with the plant’s operating and safety requirements.

Battery Backup With Power-Loss Notification
The Day & NiteOwl includes a rechargeable 12 VDC battery backup.
When the system is plugged into a standard 120 VAC wall socket, the battery charges automatically and is protected from overcharging. If power is disconnected, the battery indicator changes to gray and displays the remaining charge percentage.
A fully charged battery can operate the Day & NiteOwl for up to six hours.
The system can also issue a power-loss alert, helping personnel distinguish between a monitored equipment alarm and a wider electrical interruption at the plant.
Onboard Touchscreen and Custom Alarm Settings

The onboard touchscreen displays all connected and configured devices in one convenient location.
Operators can view monitored conditions, review equipment status, and establish user-defined alarm thresholds based on the needs of the plant.
The Day & NiteOwl can also generate time-stamped charts for:
- Tank usage
- Inventory trends
- Temperature history
- Equipment performance
- Material ordering support
These charts give plant personnel practical information that can be used for troubleshooting, operational planning, and inventory management.
Day & NiteOwl I/O Capabilities
The Day & NiteOwl provides flexible input and output capacity for monitoring multiple devices throughout the plant.
The standard Day & NiteOwl is shipped with one analog input configured for hot oil temperature monitoring. Additional inputs and outputs can be activated and configured as monitoring needs expand.

8
Analog Inputs
Eight 4-20 mA analog inputs are available for devices such as:
- Tank level sensors
- Temperature sensors
- Motor amperage sensors
- Other compatible analog monitoring devices
4
Digital Inputs
Four digital inputs can be configured for either normally open or normally closed contacts.
These inputs can be used to monitor equipment status, burner fault circuits, and other compatible plant conditions.
2
Digital Outputs
Two digital outputs that can be turned on and off locally, or remotely using a cell phone.
An example of digital output use would be to reset a passive hot oil heater reset, meaning the hot oil heater went down due to a power failure.
Expand the System Around Your Plant’s Needs
Your plant may only need hot oil temperature monitoring today, but that does not mean your monitoring requirements will stay the same.
The Day & NiteOwl gives you the ability to begin with the standard configuration and activate additional I/O capabilities as needed. This allows the system to grow with your operation without requiring an entirely new monitoring platform.
Hotmix Parts can help determine which tanks, heaters, pumps, burner circuits, and other devices should be included in your configuration.
