How a new system transformed a Louisiana plant, boosted production, dramatically reduced waste and created a safer operation

Comprehensive electronics and control systems for asphalt plants
The Accu Track Complete Plant Control System are "the brain of the operation" at Glenn Lege in Louisiana.

Cold Feed and Closed Loop Control
Most asphalt plants only use a single belt scale for the aggregate TPH and a single belt scale for the recycle TPH. During plant production, the Accu-Track computer constantly analyzes the tail shaft signal versus the computer feeder speed and makes changes to keep the feeder speed on track. If the exact ratio between the feeder speed (output signal) and the tailshaft speed (results signal) cannot be maintained, a deviation alarm will sound alerting the operator to trouble. If the feeder stalls out completely, the Accu-Track Control releases a zero speed alarm.

Multi-point Feeder Calibration
Most control systems calibrate each feeder at only one rate. The Accu-Track records the maximum tons per hour at 100 percent speed. Variable speed drives are not truly linear. This means that 50 percent speed of the feeder will not produce exactly 50 percent of the maximum tons per hour. This can cause poor gradation tests. The Accu-Track system calibrates each feeder automatically at up to three calibration points . . . 33%, 66% and 100%. Each ton per hour rate at the three speeds will be recorded by the Total Plant Control System. During plant production, the computer will automatically choose between the three calibration points to more accurately control the feeders.

Zero Speed Inputs
Sometimes, trouble sneaks up on your equipment when you least expect it. It's easy to see the asphalt plant's drum is not turning or the burner is not ignited, but how do you know when the baghouse screw auger stops turning? What's the first sign of trouble when the silo bintop conveyor stops moving the mix along?

A simple remedy to these hidden problems is a proximity or zero speed switch sending electrical pulses to the Accu-Track Control for every rotation of the tailshaft. If a pulse is not received every 5 seconds during asphalt plant production, a zero speed alarm sounds and the Accu-Track commands a system stop.

Superior Silo Bintop Control
The process of filling multiple asphalt storage silos in various positions over multiple truck scales without making a mess and causing expensive downtime can be a daunting task for most plant operators.

The Accu-Track Total Plant Control can easily stop filling one silo and switch to another silo with the press of a button. The software starts the necessary silo bintop conveyors and verifies operation using a zero speed switch. The bintop flop gates are then activated and proved using limit or proximity switches. A current transmitter attached to the drag slat and bintop conveyor motor starters allows the Accu-Track Total Plant Control to monitor the motor's amps and activate an alarm and plant shutdown if the load increases dramatically.
